The fourth annual Limousin Day held in Newark Livestock Market saw the largest entry yet in all sections and as billed had something to suit everyone with a marvellous entry of 612 cattle forward, both pedigree and crossbred. A packed ringside of buyers in confident mood with rising prices throughout the beef industry and the dominance of the Limousin breed throughout the UK meant the stage was set for an incredible day - although the weather could have been better!
Creating massive interest and the pre-sale talk of the town with a pedigree to die for was MILLINGTON CARLY (January 07 born) who took centre stage when selling for a Centre Record 8,000gns. By Robert Graham’s prolific Royal Show winner SAMY and out of SARKLEY NELLIE (who was recently sold at the NEWSTART Dispersal Sale at 11 years old for 10,000gns) this eye-catching embryo calf was eventually knocked down for the centre record of 8,000gns to pedigree breeders Messrs E Blenkhorn & Son, Howden, Goole for their Elderberry herd.
The day had got under way with the Show under the expert eye of Mr Peter Kirton, Kinlet, Bewdley, Worcestershire who runs the Ashledge Herd of Pedigree Limousins.
Champion Male and Overall Champion was BRONTEMOOR BOB (June 06) from Steven Priestley. Sired by SEAVIEW UPSTART by OCEAN and out of BRONTEMOOR TUPPENCE and with an EBV of 31, he sold to the judge Mr Peter Kirton for 4,300gns.
Reserve Champion Male was DINMORE BERNARD from Paul Dawes (May 06) by WILODGE TONKA and out of WINTERCOTT PRIMROSE the product of a successful embryo flush. With an EBV of LM32 he was snapped up by Keith Baxter, Barleston, Nuneaton at 3,600gns. By the same sire Paul Dawes also sold DINMORE BOEING (May 06) this time out of the BROADMEADOWS CANNON sired cow WILODGE PRICELESS. With an EBV of LM32, top suckler producers Messrs CE Hardcastle & Son, Little Ponton, Grantham secured BOEING at 3,100gns.
Top priced male of the day went to COACHHOUSE BENTLY from Messrs Heald & Co (Gill and Barry) who sold this tremendous son of HALTCLIFFE PICASSO who with an EBV of LM36 and out of the RONICK HAWK sired homebred cow COACHHOUSE PASQUE the eventual buyer were Rob and Sue Scott (t/a Messrs Scott & Scott Ayston Ltd), Oakham at 4,500gns.
Messrs Heald were again in the headlines this time selling COACHHOUSE BALIFF (March 06) by BAILEA ULSTERMAN and out of a HALTCLIFFE PICASSO sired cow COACHHOUSE TANDOLPH carrying an EBV of LM29. Top finished cattle men Bob and Hayden Williams were the buyers at 3,900gns.
MERESIDE BIGMAC certainly lived up to his name when sold by Roger Hazard & Sons. This very thick son of the top French sire OBJAT and out of an IMPRUDENT sired cow and with an EBV of LM34, BIGMAC sold at 4,000gns to Mr Steven Timms, Coventry.
Two bulls made 3,500gns. Firstly, Robert Hutchinson sold WILODGE THUMPER (June 02) by NOUVELLE PROSPECT and out of the French cow MASCOTTE to Mr Peter Pearson, Bradford. Next call at the same money was John White who sold RAINBOW BOUVIERRE (April 06) by the renowned French sire NENUPHAR and out of CROWHILL OUVRIERE. Successful purchasers were Messrs J & JR Appleby, Louth. The overall average for bulls sold was £2720.87 for 23.
A tremendous entry of females of all ages were on offer. In addition to the Centre Record 8,000gns, Millington Grange Estate took several of the best female prices selling PELOTTE (October 99) by DELTA and out of MYRTILLE with a tremendous MILLINGTON VELOX bull calf at foot. Top suckler producer and show man Frank Page, Rugby secured the unit at 3,100gns. MILLINGTON CADBURY (March 07), another young bred heifer sold at 2,800gns. By MAS DU CLO and out of the prolific breeder RONICK NESTLE in at the death was Paul Cairns, Tollerton, Notts.
At the same money Robert Hutchinson sold BEACONSFIELD CHARITY (February 07) by WILODGE THUMPER and out of the NESTOR sired BEACONSFIELD UNITY to the Brontemoor herd of Steven Priestley.
Two lots made 2,600gns: Messrs ME Turner sold JIMAR SALLY (July 01) by top sire RONICK ICEMAN and out of MELROSE GABRIELLE with a March 2008 heifer calf at foot by GREENWELL VISCOUNT to Keith Baxter, Nuneaton. Millington were back in action selling TANTINE (October 02) by PAVANEUR and out of PARFAITE and suckling a November 07 bull calf at foot by MILLINGTON VASCULAR. Successful purchaser was Mr Jonathon Thompson, Stainby, Lincs.
Having a good day at the office were Roger Hazard and Sons who took the Female Championship with MERESIDE BAGUIO (November 06) by OBUS and out of the LASCAR sired MERESIDE SADIE when selling for 2,500gns to Messrs PM & L Harris, Ashbourne, Derbyshire.
Straight back into the action, Messrs Harris also purchased at the same money MERESIDE BEGONIA (November 2006) and again by OBUS and out of the DYFRI ORATOR sired cow MERESIDE ULELY.
Again at 2,500gns Jim Bloom sold SCORBORO ULEX (April 03) by ELRICK RAKATEER and out of the home bred cow JAPONICA with a bull calf at foot and in calf again to COACHHOUSE SUPREME and with the highest EBV in the sale of LM44. ULEX sold to Messrs GW Holling & Son, Alfreton, Derbyshire.
