Black Limousins

Black Limousin

The Black Limousin Herd is prefixed Towthorpe, and was started because I believe there is a strong demand for Black Limousin. This has been proved correct with our sales of black bulls that have averaged £5000 each recently.

They are very quiet and the majority are polled. This herd are the progeny of embryos originally from Canada and the USA. The growth rate is fantastic putting the black Limousin in the top 1% for Beef Value. For example Greensons Ural EBV53 and Greensons Dollar EBV56, our two Black Bulls. Greensons Dollar having 115 kilos above average at 400 days old and a muscle depth of 6.6, ease of calving -0.1.

The blacks are easy calving and have good feet, having hard wearing black hooves. They are very long and have fantastic growth rate and high muscle score.

Today’s commercial beef man needs to constantly look at ways of saving costs and reducing stress.

The black limousin can do this by reducing labour and handling costs of the cattle. The black limousins are polled, saving dehorning costs, labour and stress. Black limousins are also very easy calving saving more stress and labour again.Black limousins have extremely good growth rates, saving costs on feed and housing. Black limousins have hard wearing black feet, saving foot trimming costs and again less stress to the animal. Black limousins are very quiet and easy to handle therefore saving time and stress to the animals.

Our experience is that the Black Limousins are very fertile.

Our black limousins are very long, therefore having more of the expensive cuts of meat.

Black limousins have good conformation, but lack the more extreme second muscle of the reds, therefore we have introduced some beefy type red limousin with milk into the genetics and then put the black limousines back on the off spring.

The black limousin have generally better milking qualities, so young stock have a good start, and the cow continues to milk well all of the time up to weaning.

In America, Canada and Australia where ease of cattle management is very necessary on the plains, the majority are polled and numbers increasing every day. Australia is very strong on the black limousin.  The black limousin winning most of the show prizes at the Sydney Easter Show. The Australians are starting a new cross calf, the Flexilim which is the black limousin onto Aberdeen Angus, to get more cross bred vigour and more marbling.
